2007 – has been a busy, fruitful year for Zimology. Zim and his quartet performed with special guest, bass-player William Parker at the Columbia/Harlem Global Jazz Festival, www.jazz.columbia.edu. Other international activities included Zims appearance at the Cite de la Musique festival in Paris and at the Knoxville Jazz for Justice benefit concerts, www.knoxjazzforjustice.org. A key performance of the Zimology quartet in Basel, Switzerland, resulted in the release of ’Zimology – Live at the Birds Eye Jazz Club’ – the first recording released under the Zimology label.
Locally, the Institute hosted the first batch of young musicians chosen to be mentored by Zim in a music programme supported by the National Arts Council. The programme was conducted at the Zimology Institute on its farm which is situated about 30km from Johannesburg, and resulted in a final performance of their original pieces in the studio.
Apart from providing rehearsal space for musicians, the Institute also hosted and played with European jazz musicians, Mike del Ferro, Jeroen van Vliet and Pascal Vermeer. A special guest at Zimology was legendary drummer, Makhaya Ntshoko. At his performance in Cape Town, Mike del ferro publicly thanked Zim for providing a creative home for musicians.
Local performances included Zims performance with drummer, Louis Moholo at the Jazz Leadership concert at Carnival City, the Quartets performance at a salute to Judge Arthur Chaskalson and at the MTN Global Leadership conference.
